GETTING THERE
Air, sea or land - these are the three basic ways to get to, and around Alaska. Most fly into the The Land of the Midnight Sun, others come by cruise line or state ferry ( Alaska Marine Highway System ), some by rail, and a few arrive by highway.
A regional hub for both local carriers and Alaska Airlines, Juneau International Airport is just eight miles northwest of the state capital. Apart from cruise ships and the Alaska Marine Highway - sea access - the only way in and out of Juneau is by air.
Juneau is also part of the Southeast, Inside Passage routing of the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system from Bellingham in Washington State, USA. The route includes Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Skagway and Haines, with connections to Hoonah, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, Sitka, Angoon, Kake, Hollis and Metlakatla. Walk-on reservations are almost never needed for the Alaska Marine Highway, but those requiring a private cabin or needing to book avehicle should call ahead of time.
Many cruiselines exploring the Inside Passage will make a stop at Juneau.
Because there is no direct road access to Juneau, some visitors take the Haines Highway (Alaska Route 7) from the famous Alaska Highway and then use the state ferry to reach Juneau.
