Walk-on reservations are almost never needed for the Alaska Marine Highway, but those requiring a private cabin or needing to book avehicle should call ahead of time.
By car, the 142-mile Sterling Highway from just south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway connects Homer with Anchorage, and along the way, Soldotna.
