GETTING THERE
Air, sea or land - these are the three basic ways to get to, and around Alaska. Most fly into the The Land of the Midnight Sun, others come by cruise line or state ferry ( Alaska Marine Highway System ), some by rail, and a few arrive by highway.
Though not one of Alaska’s primary airports, Haines Airport, three miles west of downtown Haines, connects Haines with Gustavus, Juneau and Skagway.
Haines is also part of the Southeast, Inside Passage routing of the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system from Bellingham in Washington State, USA. The route includes Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau and Skagway, with connections to Hoonah, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, Sitka, Angoon, Kake, Hollis and Metlakatla. Walk-on reservations are almost never needed for the Alaska Marine Highway, but those requiring a private cabin or needing to book avehicle should call ahead of time.
By car, the Haines Highway connects the small town with the major Alaska Highway and from further connections throughout the state.
