GETTING THERE
Air, sea or land - these are the three basic ways to get to, and around Alaska. Most fly into the The Land of the Midnight Sun, others come by cruise line or state ferry ( Alaska Marine Highway System ), some by rail, and a few arrive by highway.
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is located 4 miles southwest of downtown Anchorage. More than 20 international airlines connect Anchorage, Alaska with all points of the globe, from Taipei to Frankfurt and most major cities in the USA.
While the Alaska Marine Highway does not call in at Anchorage, it does stop at nearby Whittier not far from Anchorage. Walk-on reservations are almost never needed for the Alaska Marine Highway, but those requiring a private cabin or needing to book avehicle should call ahead of time.
Some cruiselines begin and end their cruises in Anchorage, but many of them also use Seward as a starting point rather than Anchorage itself.
By car, the 127-mile Seward Highway (Alaska Route 1 and 9) connects Anchorage with Seward and the 358-mile George Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3) links Anchorage to Fairbanks. The most direct route between Anchorage and Fairbanks is the Parks Highway which also serves Denali National Park. Also, the 142-mile Sterling Highway from just south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway connects Homer with Anchorage, and along the way, Soldotna.
By train, the Alaska Railroad plies the route between Seward in the Gulf of Alaska to Fairbanks and offers stops along the way including Anchorage, Wasilla and Denali National Park.
