KENAI

Located on the edge of the the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge near Seward and Homer and surrounded by spectacular scenery, Kenai offers visitors a wealth of wildlife, outdoor opportunities and a rich history of native and Russian settlements and culture.

Wildlife opportunities include watching for Beluga whales, and Arctic Tern feeding on juvenile salmon, at the mouth of the Kenai River, taking in Caribou herds on the Kenai River flats, and spotting the wealth of bird life from sandhill cranes and parasitic jaegers, to herring , mew and slaty-backed gulls.

The Kenai River is also known for its world-class King Salmon fishing.

The Kenai area’s growing reputation as a place of creative expression is well deserved as it develops visitor-friendly sites and centers.

The Kenai Fine Arts Center, located in Old Town Kenai, provides studio space for members of the Peninsula Art Guild and the Kenai Potters Guild. The guilds host monthly art exhibitions, maintain an artist sales gallery, and offers a variety of art workshops for adults and children.

The Kenai Visitors & Cultural Center in Old Town, Kenai features a large cultural room with wildlife displays, Alaskan videos, and staff who can provide information on all available activities and current happenings.

The self guided tour of Old Town Kenai offers a number of attractions such as The Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1894 and one of the oldest standing Orthodox churches in Alaska. The tour takes in 18 historic buildings.

The region is also rich in Gold Rush history. Visitors can raft down Sixmile Creek and see evidence of mining operations from days past.

Kenai Landing, site of an historical cannery, is a 65-acre, waterfront resort community surrounded by wildlife and natural beauty. The original buildings now provide accommodation, restaurants, arts and crafts venues, theater, pavilion, a promenade and even onsite fishing opportunities.
